I've had the pleasure of working with him in numerous capacities -- at the district level, at the state level, within a state council, and now as part of a national organization -- and he always brings energy, professionalism, and a willingness to listen. There are very few people in the social studies world who have the variety of experience and passion for the work like Joe.

Joe's skills as a social studies teacher and leader in the field are unmatched.  He knows and advocates for the profession, as well as the importance of social studies education, better than anyone I've ever worked with.

I spent some time thinking about what I could say in support of Joe Schmidt. My

goal was to give an earth-shattering testimonial about why he should be the next

President of NCSS. With more than 20 years’ experience in education, a former state

social studies specialist, and current senior manager with a curriculum company, I

believe I am knowledgeable enough to use a plethora of social studies and education

terminology to describe Joe. I could say that he is a man that understands the national

shifts in social studies education, including civic engagement and deep understanding

of the C3 Framework. Maybe discuss Joe’s experience with revising and implementing

state social studies standards, developing and leading professional learning, and

working effectively with other social studies leaders. Here is the thing. My written

statement for Joe may not be earth-shattering, but his work in the field of social studies

has been. One would be hard-pressed to find someone as qualified as Joe. Very few

have the experience, relationships, and knowledge of Joe Schmidt and this is why he

will make an excellent NCSS President.

I wholeheartedly endorse Joe Schmidt for NCSS President.  Joe embodies the key characteristics of the next generation of social studies leadership.  He has a firm command of social studies content, and methods, and knows what teachers need to be effective in the classroom. During the pandemic, when education, especially social studies education, was put on the back burner, Joe was creating active and engaging social studies learning communities across his state.  He has earned the trust of teachers, administrators, and educational professionals then and now he has earned their trust across the entire country. Joe’s leadership is what social studies needs.  In these troubled times social studies and social studies teachers need support.  Joe has a proven track record of providing the support teachers need.
